Rudy's Last Dog Life

I have lived as a dog in the world of man

felt the sting of boot, drank from empty bowl

run long and hard from the choking chain

'til no trace of hope remained in my soul.

I have lived as a dog in the world of dog

felt the tearing tooth as it pierced my skin

fought for pride and turf, my place in the pack

for rank and rancor, blood and kin.

I wandered lost 'til I found hymn

kind man, full bowl, warm bed, a home,

and in this place my troubles fled,

and from this place I did not roam.

Now I shall live as a man

in the world of dog and man

be not fooled, good friend, by this disguise

if our paths meet, in sweet return

you'll know me by my amber eyes.
