An Older Woman

 Old she was, and weathered,

By Time's unstinting hand.

She was there at my beginning,

Walked with me, held my hand.

This woman taught me many things,

Her wisdom deep and timeless..

But most important of them all,

She taught me love and kindness.

I grew to manhood, went away,

Far from my native shores.

And still she taught me many things,

And opened many doors.

I wasn't there so many times,

The youth are always driven.

But from the kindness of her heart,

Somehow I was forgiven.

So many things I missed, you see,

So far away from home.

But I always loved to look out there,

And always loved to roam.

But still, with me she always went,

Locked deep inside my heart.

And taught me things I'd never known,

Though we were far apart.

Gone she is forever now,

Cast from this mortal coil.

Her body long since given up,

And buried 'neath the soil.

The things she taught still linger on,

Locked deep inside this man.

And still I love you very much,

And I'll always miss you, Gran.
