Is it Ok if I Love You?

Is it ok if I love you?

Words spoken in a time of joy.

Whispered gently, in a questing tone,

Fearful of rejection, a negative response.

But lovingly,

By one who cares deeply.

And suffered much along the way.

Is it ok to love me?

A question only time can answer.

Everyone has a history, good or bad,

Like a stone, we carry the burden.

It is ours,

Made larger over time.

And carried all our days.

Is it ok if I love you?

How wonderful to hear that.

The excitement, the anticipation of What If.

Heart pounding fast, a positive thing.

Yet fearful,

By one who cares too deeply.

And suffered much along the way.

Is it ok to love me?

Things get in the way sometimes.

Not your fault, perhaps not mine,

Perhaps just the hand fate has dealt.

It doesn't matter,

For you are in my heart,

And I'll love you all my days.
